'The Custard Boys' is a moralistic take on war and how it impacts on everyone as seen through the eyes of John Curlew (Chris Chescoe), an evacuee during WW2 who finds himself far from the action but very much wanting to part of the fighting. Reality intrudes when a new boy, Austrian Jewish evacuee, Mark Stein (Eric Milliett), Joins John at school. John learns a harsh lesson in the realities of war and, unexpectedly (and only hinted at in this version) love.
